An open letter to my husband

My husband has the sort of job where you have to shave and get dressed. I have the sort of job where you have to do neither. He has to set an alarm on the morning to get ready for work, the other morning I complained how he was waking everyone up with being so noisy in the morning, his comment being I am the one that has to get up for work – however when he is up so are me and E, so I am assuming being a stay at home mum isn’t viewed at work? I tend to feel defensive about this, particularly when he asks, “So what are you up to today or tomorrow?” Up to? Up to? “Up to” is a phrase used for kids and retirees, people with tons of free time. My answer is at once “not much” and “you name it’. I’m… View Post

Lessons you teach a toddler

My job as a parent is to teach my toddler how the world works.  I make sure she knows that ovens are hot, snow is cold and it’s always nice to share – especially chocolate, with your mummy. But despite my best efforts, a lot of what my E is learning as a toddler seems to run counter to real life.  Here are some of the unrealistic expectations I think we’re setting for her: 1. Every time someone visits, they bring you a gift. 2. Whenever you do something new, people applaud. 3. Your poops are a cause for celebration. 4. Mispronouncing a word is adorable. 5. Your singing voice is perfection and people want you to sing more! 6. Eating with your hands, eating under the table, eating while running – all fine!  Everyone’s just happy you’re getting your nutritional needs met. 7. Clothing is optional. 8. When you get tired,… View Post

Rock pool fun

We have been fortunate to have had some lovely weather this last couple of weeks in September, some of the days have been nicer than they were in August. As the sun is shining we have been trying to make the most of the good weather, on Sunday we decided to head down to the beach to take E rock pooling, daddy had bought her a net a while ago and since then she loves to go exploring the rock pools. After a little look at the tide times online we went out for some fun. It was fairly blustery down on the beach at points, but it was still warm. Exmouth beach is a lovely long sandy beach, the golden sands seem to go on forever. At one end of the beach there are a lot of Rock pools to be explored when the tide has gone out. Going Rock Pooling… View Post

Indoor activities for toddlers.

E has lots of toys, sometimes I think too many, after all she cant play with them all at once. What I do find is that E sometime gets bored, even with all her toys and when E gets bored she gets naughty and demanding. It’s hard to find indoor play activities for bored toddlers that don’t require a lot of time, money, and set-up or clean up. But with a little creative thinking and a few standard household items, you can come up with lots of fun play activities for toddlers. I have sat down and had a think of different things we can do on wet weather days when she is a little bored and I intend to use this list for me to refer too when we are having a board moment. A lot of these we have done and everybody knows how much fun they can… View Post
