When you decide to start a family, car seats are not something you immediately think about. However when it comes to taking the baby home by law you need to have a car seat.

As car crashes are the number one killer of children, using a car seat is extremely important. Using a car safety seat can reduce the risk of death by 71%.

There are a lot of different types of car seats available to buy and it can all be a little confusing. Especially as the laws keep changing. And to add to that not every car seat fits every car.  We found that several car seats were just too big.

Car Seat Safety

It is essential you find a child car seat that is a perfect fit to your car. If you have an ISOFIX seat, you can visit the manufacturer’s website for an up to date vehicle fitting list. Or you can go to an out-of-town store with its own car park and ask to try the car seat in your car, most retailers are more than happy to help.

When looking for car seats, look for ones that are size related. Retailers that sell car seat seats will be able to point you in the right direction.

Here are a few things to remember:-

  • Remove puffy coats and snowsuits, these cause the harness to fit incorrectly
  • Ensure the straps are level with your child’s shoulders. From the point where the straps come out of the seat.
  • Tighten the straps just so you can slip your finger between the child and the harness at collarbone level.
  • Remember the hardness is their seatbelt and needs to hold them in place is there is an accident.

Bringing a new baby home Is exciting, the best way to keep that baby safe is by using a car safety seat. What I find is scary is that 47% of car seats are fitted incorrectly. When you buy a car seat it is worth having a safety check done.

Cars.com have information on Car Seat Checks which explains the sort of things that are checked. If your unsure if you have fitted the car seat properly find out where you can get a safety check done. We did it before I had the baby, just for peace of mind.
