Being a mum

Things I Struggle To Do Now I Am A Mum

Being a mum is a great job, honestly it really is. However it comes with its challenges and sometimes every day normal things seem impossible. Here are several thing that I struggle to do now that I have children.

  1. Speaking to anyone on the phone. It is not possible to hear a word or follow the conversation with your one year old asking making a lot of noise and trying to get hold of the phone. Face Time is even worse, he likes to take the phone and walk round the room with it.
  2. Going to the toilet alone. Even if you close the door, the one year old will open it so both he and the five year old can join you, maybe even perform a song or dance.
  3. Sleeping with all the lights in the house off. Night lights seem to light up the upstairs of the house.
  4. Maintaining nicely painted nails. Not only is it impossible to find the time to have them painted but then to keep them nice while digging holes, collecting sticks and tidying toys is impossible.
  5. Vacationing at cool places. I now have holiday envy from stalking people on Facebook.
  6. Knowing where the TV remote is. Last week it was in the toy box.
  7. Holding a conversation with another adult during daylight hours that isn’t peppered with ‘no, don’t do that’, ‘I’m here’, ‘where are you’, ‘what are you doing’.
  8. Leaving the house in less than 40 minutes. Even after the 40 minutes of preparation we still frequently forget something.
  9. Weekends away… If it takes 40 minutes and two trips back to the house just to go shopping it takes weeks of planning to go away, a car full of bags and a whole lot of patience to get everyone somewhere that isn’t the lounge.
  10. Brushing my hair, teeth, showering and wearing ironed clothes all in the same day.
  11. Keeping my iPhone in tact and not sticky. This week alone it’s had sticky jam dotted on it like art and biscuit smeared on the screen courtesy of my littlest. I must accept this as Siri is the one year olds best friend, after all he gets very excited when Siri talks to him. Best Friends For Life!
  12. Going to bed at a reasonable hour. Let’s be honest you can only really do anything with a modicum of functionality when they’re sleeping.
  13. Leaving a glass or pen on a coffee table without chaos ensuing.
  14. Wearing high heels. It’s gone. The ability has left me. I feel lost, like a Jimmy Choo in a world of flip flops and trainers.
  15. Enjoy a conversation with my husband that doesn’t revolve around the children.
  16. Doing anything on a computer or iPhone – computers and phones are absolutely fascinating to children – all those buttons, a screen and lights – it’s like a tv play Centre.
  17. On the plus side there are now a whole host of things I can do with one hand or an elbow courtesy of the carrying-children-on-your-hip’ experience I have now acquired. But that’s a whole ‘nother post for another day.

  1. You don’t always realise how much has changed until you see it all written down this way. I’ve gotten used to talking to friends on the phone and randomly hearing things like “What are you doing” “Where are you” and “no, I’m on the phone” lol

  2. I can relate to all of these, before becoming a parent I really didn’t appreciate how things would change. Now I end up scheduling phone calls for the couple of days that I’m in work as it’s a nightmare trying to have a sensible, and often important, phone call with a baby crawling around. We also only EVER talk about him, what he did that day, how adorable he is etc etc. Gone are the nice chats about the rest of our lives, it’s the sole topic of conversation in this house!!

    1. It is here too. My husband works away during the week so when he is home he wants to talk about the kids. I would like to be me and not just mummy and to have some normal child free conversations.. I can’t see it happening anytime soon though.

  3. Yup I’m nodding my head along to all of your points here. I’ve been there on them all! All I can say is it gets a little easier to use your phone when they get older lol The rest of your points are all about the same. Going to the toilet alone – just forget about that one altogether.

  4. All of these and more, definitely. You are never alone once you have kids because they invade your very being. But they give you so much back, plus hopefully they’ll look after you in your old age. We hope.

  5. Haha, these are all so, so true. It wasn’t until I read this that I realised how much I missed being able to sleep in a pitch black room. We’ve still got the baby in with us so we have a gro egg on my bedside table which illuminates the whole room at night!

  6. YES! I’m nodding along to every single one. The worst for me is not having my nails done, I used to get them done at the salon all of the time but long nails and small children just aren’t practical, and home nail varnish chips so much when you are picking up after kids! And don’t talk to me about wearing heels, I used to rock the 6″ heals and now i can barely walk in anything more than a 2!

  7. Ha ha the joys of being a mum! Hate a sticky phone. My childless colleagues say I’m a good advert for contraception x

  8. Not only do I not get my nails done I don’t even get a chance to file them! Its scary how much has changed I was nodding along to all of these. Especially the cool destinations for holidays, we were looking at options the other night and have decided not to go during the Summer holidays because of the baby….sob. As for going to bed at a reasonable hour now I am writing I am lucky if I make it to bed before midnight. I wouldn’t change it though.

  9. Ahhh, the tv remote. N is forever losing the one in the back room. He’s the only one who watches that tv but he just can’t put the remote in the same place all the time! #thelistlinky

  10. Haha, I smiled and nodded my way through list! Especially the first one though, I was on the phone this morning to my son’s swimming teacher and my 3 year old yelled the whole time that she wanted to talk too! I had to try and explain that it wasn’t one of our friends on the phone! x #TheListLinky

  11. I’ts crazy isn’t it? I’ve even tried getting up early but they seem to have a 6th sense for that too. Have to say it was the allotment that killed my nails though so can’t blame that one on the children.
