Downton Abbey Movie Review

I’ll be the first to admit it…. I do love Downton Abbey TV series. What can I say…. I’m a sucker for costume period pieces and Downton Abbey is probably the best example of a costume period piece. Because of the love of this series i was really looking forward to watching the new Downton Abbey the Movie. It didn’t disappoint.

Longtime fans of the series: prepare to be swept away in a sea of nostalgia as you are reunited with characters and welcomed home as you are ushered through those ever so familiar Abbey halls. Relive the memories of when you first delved into the world of Downton all over again. After almost ten years since first going to air, Downton Abbey remains a timeless classic to this day, proving that British period dramas well and truly never go out of style.

For those that are fans of the Downton Sage, the series follows the lives of the upstairs family (the Crawleys) and the downstairs staff at Downton Abbey.

The Story

In this chapter, we find the Crawley’s in 1927 (shortly after the events in the series) preparing to welcome King George V and Queen Mary to to Downton Abbey. The king and queen are taking a royal tour through the country.

While the royal visit creates a natural “buzz” in the community, the Downton Abbey staff excites and panics, forcing Mary to cut retirement short for former head butler Carson, replacing current head butler Barrow while the demands of the royal staff are sorted out.

Realizing that the royal staff has no intention of using the Downton Abbey employees. workers, such as Mr. Bates , Mrs. Hughes , Mrs. Patmore , and Anna hatch a plan to reclaim the glory for the estate.

Coming along with the royal entourage is Lady Maud Bagshaw , the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, joined by her maid Lucy, and while’s a cousin to Robert , her choice to keep her fortune away from the Crawleys raises ire from matriarch Violet. While plans commence for the King and Queen’s visit, Tom is put in a difficult position when his patriotism is called into question by a mysterious man named Major Chetwode. Leaving the Irishman uneasy about the important royal visit.

Our Opinions

What did I think of it? Well, I actually loved it. Despite a few minor nitpicks, Downton Abbey is a charming and lavishing follow-up movie to series of the same name. This movie doesn’t push the main story into a whole new territory. However It’s the familiarity with the Downton Abbey characters that makes the film work so well.

Charming Yorkishire accents, handsome gentlemen looking dapper in their tailord suits, and a wickedly sassy Maggie Smith. What more could you possibly ask for in a film?

I would recommend you go and see it even if you’ve never watched the series. It certainly left me with a warm fuzzy feeling after watching it. I think it will be enjoyed by fans and also those that have never watched Downton Abbey. I do love a good movie and this is one i definitely recommend.
