We are all aware of how important it is to keep our homes safe. We take good care of our belongings whilst out and about and the prospect of our homes burgled is abhorrent. But how many of us think about keeping our garden secure. It should be one of our major concerns, especially if you have nice garden furniture and expensive equipment.
Unfortunately Burglars will take what ever they can get their hands on. With Burglaries on the rise is important to make sure your garden is equally as safe as your home.
Did you know that between July 2016 and June 2017, almost 400,000 homes were burgled in the UK – and those are just the incidents that were reported the police? London was the most heavily impacted, hosting 80% of the postal codes who reported break-ins and domestic thefts.
Not all burglaries take the form of balaclava-clad ne’er-do-wells sneaking into your home at the dead of night and filling a swag bag. Usually an unlocked door or window is located, and sometimes entry is forced through the front door. Make sure all doors and windows are locked when you leave your home.
Always be wary of door to door sales people. Don’t invite them into your home and always ask for ID. Statistics suggest that many homeowners have been robbed by allowing strangers posing as door-to-door salespeople to enter their homes, only to live to regret this lapse in judgment.
In fact, it may surprise you to know that most burglaries actually take place in daylight hours, typically between 10am and 3pm, and can be completed in less than ten minutes by an experienced thief. If you are at work during these hours it might be worth investing in some form of security. This can often deter burglar’s.
Lock away any garden furniture you can, it doesn’t matter if the furniture Is heavy. If a burglar wants it, they will find a way to take it.
Another important thing to think about is your pets. You hear a lot about pets being stolen. Make sure your dog is microchipped and kept inside when you aren’t home.
