Christmas really is just around the corner.. just two weeks until the big day. Christmas shopping is almost complete and now my thoughts are going to a Christmas Eve box. We have only ever put a couple of things in, after all they get plenty of gifts on Christmas Day.
However the more i think about it the more i wonder where this tradition came from and more importantly what to put in the Christmas eve box. Also are the boxes just for children or cater for all?
Suggestions of things to put in a Christmas Eve Box
Christmas Film
Watching a film on Christmas Eve is always nice, it doesn’t have to be at night. During the afternoon is just as good. A new DVD is an option. Or a made up ticket so that you can watch any film you like. There are plenty of great Christmas films. The Grinch, Christmas Chronicles, Elf, The polar express, the choices are endless.
Popcorn *
A great snack to go with any film. Metcalfe’s Popcorn Jumbles has launched two flavour combos, Toffee Apple and Eton Mess, and we were met with a nice surprise. The toffee apple pack contained toffee and caramel-coated popcorn jumbled up with slices of dried apple. It was super tasty. Then the Eton Mess pack, bursting with strawberry pieces and crunchy meringue to go with the strawberry-coated popcorn, replicating one of my favourite deserts.
New Pyjamas
A nice new cosy pair of PJ’s are a great addition to a Christmas Eve box. They can be festive ones or just nice new ones. i like the idea of none festive ones, that way they can be worn all year round.
Christmas Story Book
We always read the night before Christmas on Christmas Eve. Including any book old or new is good addition to a Christmas Eve box. This year we are adding a new book, it will appeal to both of my children, particularly the youngest. The book you add to a Christmas Eve box doesn’t have to be a festive themed book, just a book your children will love.
Some Yummy Chocolate *
Christmas themed chocolate is a fun suggestion to put in a Christmas Eve Box. Thorntons sell a selection of different chocolate characters. i like the Cheeky Elf, especially as our elves leave the children the Christmas eve box. Our Cheeky Elf is to share. The Cheeky Elf is a combination of milk, dark and white chocolate. A super tasty treat on Christmas Eve.
Colouring or Activity Book
A great way to keep your children entertained whilst you are busy sorting out some last minuet Christmas preparations. You can add an activity book or colouring. Child age dependent. There are also some great sets with colouring sheets and activities that you can purchase. I picked one up for 99p
Craft Activity
Another great way of keeping the children occupied. A Christmas craft will be fun to make. Something simple so the children can do it alone or with little supervision. There are so many great pre packed craft sets available. Or you can make up a little bag of craft items so they can use their imagination and make anything they want.
Hot Chocolate
A nice hot chocolate for before bedtime. A nice warm drink always settles the children well. I think putting hot chocolate in the box with some marshmallows is a lovely idea.
Reindeer Food
Some reindeer food in a little packet that can be scattered on the law at night. Make sure it is safe for the environment. Oats and some edible glitter works well. You can make your own and put this on the top. Sprinkle on your lawn at night, the moon will make it sparkle bright. As the reindeer fly and roam, this will guide them to your home.
There are so many things you can put inside a Christmas Eve Box, If you don’t want to do a box then you could always just leave a couple of items such as hot chocolate and reindeer food.
