This Autumn, Puffin have published a beautiful new picture-book edition of the classic poem by Edward Lear, The Owl and the Pussy-cat. The book is illustrated by Charlotte Voake, with a lovely foreword by Julia Donaldson, which I recommend reading.
I have fond memories of this book from my childhood, the classic poem Is a fantastic nonsense poem, and one that most people are instantly familiar with. The poem tells the story of an owl and a pussy cat that go to sea in a beautiful pea green boat, the poem itself is short and very memorable.
Charlotte Vokes illustrations are wonderful, they are lovely pastel colours, with lots of detail, which made it interesting for E to look at and as there is only a few lines of text on each page it makes it easy reading and keeps E’s attention.
I loved sharing this poem with E, the rhyming text of the poem makes it a joy to read and I hope E loves the poem as much as I do. Hopefully when E is older she will also have fond memories of reading it as a child.
This poem is no doubt more familiar to adults than it is children, however now this new picture book has been released this book is one that should be on every child’s bookcase.

I used to love this book as a kid! Mine was a little hardback book though 🙂
I won a copy of this book in a Tesco comp last year and have to agree it is beautiful.

This looks like a lovely version of the classic story and perfect for sharing with the family.
The pictures look absolutely lovely!
A lovely book and a fascinating poem. I used to love sitting and reading books to my niece, she getting older now and likes to read by herself.
